Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek eec12b7756 machined: simplify reference handling for units
Before, we'd unref from machine_stop_unit, still keeping the unit name around,
and only forget the name later, when garbage collecting. If we didn't call
manager_stop_unit(), then we wouldn't do the unref. Let's unref at the same
point where we do garbage collection, so that it is always true that
iff we have the name generated with AddRef=1, then have a reference to the unit,
and as soon as we forget the name, we drop the reference.

This should fix the issue when repeated systemd-nspawn --register=yes fails
with "scope already exists" error.

Incidentally, this fixes an error in the code path where r was used instead of q.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek af22794712 machine: make machine_start_scope() static
Having this function which is called only from one place in a separate file
makes the code harder to follow. In preparation for subsequent changes, let's
make it static.

Lennart Poettering 353b2baa20 tree-wide: clean up --help texts a bit
This cleans up and unifies the outut of --help texts a bit:

1. Highlight the human friendly description string, not the command
line via ANSI sequences. Previously both this description string and
the brief command line summary was marked with the same ANSI
highlight sequence, but given we auto-page to less and less does not
honour multi-line highlights only the command line summary was
affectively highlighted. Rationale: for highlighting the description
instead of the command line: the command line summary is relatively
boring, and mostly the same for out tools, the description on the
other hand is pregnant, important and captions the whole thing and
   hence deserves highlighting.

2. Always suffix "Options" with ":" in the help text

3. Rename "Flags" → "Options" in one case

4. Move commands to the top in a few cases

5. add coloring to many more help pages

6. Unify on COMMAND instead of {COMMAND} in the command line summary.
Some tools did it one way, others the other way. I am not sure what
precisely {} is supposed to mean, that uppercasing doesn't, hence
let's simplify and stick to the {}-less syntax

And minor other tweaks.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 2798430e00 machined: only Unref units that we AddRef'd
b92d0b4c5a added AddRef to the StartTransientUnit
call in machine_start_scope()/manager_start_scope() and a corresponding Unref
call in machine_stop_scope(). But when we are running systemd-nspawn@ with
--keep unit, the unit is not created by machined so the AddRef never happens.
Then when trying to stop the unit, we'd get:

systemd-machined[1101]: Sent message type=method_call sender=n/a destination=org.freedesktop.systemd1 path=/org/freedesktop/systemd1 interface=org.freedesktop.systemd1.Manager member=UnrefUnit cookie=37 reply_cookie=0 signature=s error-name=n/a error-message=n/a

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek ef8ff92e8a machined: add UnregisterMachine method
This is the opposite of RegisterMachine: machined knows that the machine is

but that would stop the unit, which isn't always wanted.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek a5648b8094 basic/fs-util: change CHASE_OPEN flag into a separate output parameter
chase_symlinks() would return negative on error, and either a non-negative status
or a non-negative fd when CHASE_OPEN was given. This made the interface quite
complicated, because dependning on the flags used, we would get two different
"types" of return object. Coverity was always confused by this, and flagged
every use of chase_symlinks() without CHASE_OPEN as a resource leak (because it
would this that an fd is returned). This patch uses a saparate output parameter,
so there is no confusion.

(I think it is OK to have functions which return either an error or an fd. It's
only returning *either* an fd or a non-fd that is confusing.)

Franck Bui ae1d13db05 terminal-util: introduce openpt_allocate()
Allocating a pty is done in a couple of places so let's introduce a new helper
which does the job.

Also the new function, as well as openpt_in_namespace(), returns both pty
master and slave so the callers don't need to know about the pty slave
allocation details.

For the same reasons machine_openpt() prototype has also been changed to return
both pty master and slave so callers don't need to allocate a pty slave which
might be in a different namespace.

Finally openpt_in_namespace() has been renamed into
openpt_allocate_in_namespace().

necessary.

Lennart Poettering b1a4981aed tree-wide: whenever we allocate a new bus object, close it before dropping final ref
This doesn't really change much, but feels more correct to do, as it
ensures that all messages currently queued in the bus connections are
definitely unreffed and thus destryoing of the connection object will
follow immediately.

Strictly speaking this change is entirely unnecessary, since nothing
else could have acquired a ref to the connection and queued a message
in, however, now that we have the new sd_bus_close_unref() helper it
makes a lot of sense to use it here, to ensure that whatever happens
nothing that might have been queued fucks with us.

Lennart Poettering 5f7ecd610c import: drop logic of setting up /var/lib/machines as btrfs loopback mount
Let's simplify things and drop the logic that /var/lib/machines is setup
as auto-growing btrfs loopback file /var/lib/machines.raw.

THis was done in order to make quota available for machine management,
but quite frankly never really worked properly, as we couldn't grow the
file system in sync with its use properly. Moreover philosophically it's
problematic overriding the admin's choice of file system like this.

Let's hence drop this, and simplify things. Deleting code is a good
feeling.

Now that regular file systems provide project quota we could probably
add per-machine quota support based on that, hence the btrfs quota
argument is not that interesting anymore (though btrfs quota is a bit
more powerful as it allows recursive quota, i.e. that the machine pool
gets an overall quota in addition to per-machine quota).

Lennart Poettering d68c645bd3 core: rework serialization
Let's be more careful with what we serialize: let's ensure we never
serialize strings that are longer than LONG_LINE_MAX, so that we know we
can read them back with read_line(…, LONG_LINE_MAX, …) safely.

In order to implement this all serialization functions are move to
serialize.[ch], and internally will do line size checks. We'd rather
skip a serialization line (with a loud warning) than write an overly
long line out. Of course, this is just a second level protection, after
all the data we serialize shouldn't be this long in the first place.

While we are at it also clean up logging: while serializing make sure to
always log about errors immediately. Also, (void)ify all calls we don't
expect errors in (or catch errors as part of the general
fflush_and_check() at the end.

Lennart Poettering 1abaf4887d tree-wide: uniformly bump RLIMIT_NOFILE in all our tools that access the journal
This makes use of rlimit_nofile_bump() in all tools that access the
journal. In some cases this replaces older code to achieve this, and
others we add it in where it was missing.

Also, while we are at it, beef it up, by adding json-seq support (i.e.

conjunction with jq's --seq switch.

Lennart Poettering 37ec0fdd34 tree-wide: add clickable man page link to all --help texts
This is a bit like the info link in most of GNU's --help texts, but we
don't do info but man pages, and we make them properly clickable on
terminal supporting that, because awesome.

I think it's generally advisable to link up our (brief) --help texts and
our (more comprehensive) man pages a bit, so this should be an easy and
straight-forward way to do it.

This commit adds the stop alias to the output of `machinectl --help`.
In the past we only mention this in the man page. It's nice to mention
this in the output `machinectl --help` as well.

Lennart Poettering 0c69794138 tree-wide: remove Lennart's copyright lines
These lines are generally out-of-date, incomplete and unnecessary. With
SPDX and git repository much more accurate and fine grained information
about licensing and authorship is available, hence let's drop the
per-file copyright notice. Of course, removing copyright lines of others
is problematic, hence this commit only removes my own lines and leaves
all others untouched. It might be nicer if sooner or later those could
go away too, making git the only and accurate source of authorship
information.

Lennart Poettering 818bf54632 tree-wide: drop 'This file is part of systemd' blurb
This part of the copyright blurb stems from the GPL use recommendations:

https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.en.html

The concept appears to originate in times where version control was per
file, instead of per tree, and was a way to glue the files together.
Ultimately, we nowadays don't live in that world anymore, and this
information is entirely useless anyway, as people are very welcome to
copy these files into any projects they like, and they shouldn't have to
change bits that are part of our copyright header for that.

hence, let's just get rid of this old cruft, and shorten our codebase a
bit.
