The tool resolves way more than just hosts, hence give it a more generic name. This should be safe, as the tool is
currently undocumented. Before we add documentation for it, let's get the name right.
This also moves the C source into src/resolve/ (from src/resolve-host/), since the old name is a misnomer now. Also,
since it links directly to many of the C files of resolved it really belongs into resolved's directory anyway.
This collects statistical data about transactions, dnssec verifications
and the cache, and exposes it over the bus. The systemd-resolve-host
tool learns new options to query these statistics and reset them.
Let's simplify usage and memory management of DnsResourceRecord's
dns_resource_record_to_string() call: cache the formatted string as
part of the object, and return it on subsequent calls, freeing it when
the DnsResourceRecord itself is freed.
This adds a new DnsAnswer item flag "DNS_ANSWER_SHARED_OWNER" which is
set for mDNS RRs that lack the cache-flush bit. The cache-flush bit is
removed from the DnsResourceRecord object in favour of this.
This also splits out the code that removes previous entries when adding
new positive ones into a new separate call dns_cache_remove_previous().
Let's make DNS class helpers more like DNS type helpers, let's move them
from resolved-dns-rr.[ch] into dns-type.[ch].
This also adds two new calls dns_class_is_pseudo() and
dns_class_is_valid_rr() which operate similar to dns_type_is_pseudo()
and dns_type_is_valid_rr() but for classes instead of types.
This should hopefully make handling of DNS classes and DNS types more
alike.
This adds a new SD_RESOLVED_AUTHENTICATED flag for responses we return
on the bus. When set, then the data has been authenticated. For now this
mostly reflects the DNSSEC AD bit, if DNSSEC=trust is set. As soon as
the client-side validation is complete it will be hooked up to this flag
too.
We also set this bit whenver we generated the data ourselves, for
example, because it originates in our local LLMNR zone, or from the
built-in trust anchor database.
The "systemd-resolve-host" tool has been updated to show the flag state
for the data it shows.
GLIB has recently started to officially support the gcc cleanup
attribute in its public API, hence let's do the same for our APIs.
With this patch we'll define an xyz_unrefp() call for each public
xyz_unref() call, to make it easy to use inside a
__attribute__((cleanup())) expression. Then, all code is ported over to
make use of this.
The new calls are also documented in the man pages, with examples how to
use them (well, I only added docs where the _unref() call itself already
had docs, and the examples, only cover sd_bus_unrefp() and
sd_event_unrefp()).
This also renames sd_lldp_free() to sd_lldp_unref(), since that's how we
tend to call our destructors these days.
Note that this defines no public macro that wraps gcc's attribute and
makes it easier to use. While I think it's our duty in the library to
make our stuff easy to use, I figure it's not our duty to make gcc's own
features easy to use on its own. Most likely, client code which wants to
make use of this should define its own:
#define _cleanup_(function) __attribute__((cleanup(function)))
Or similar, to make the gcc feature easier to use.
Making this logic public has the benefit that we can remove three header
files whose only purpose was to define these functions internally.

This adds support for searching single-label hostnames in a set of
configured search domains.
A new object DnsQueryCandidate is added that links queries to scopes.
It keeps track of the search domain last used for a query on a specific
link. Whenever a host name was unsuccessfuly resolved on a scope all its
transactions are flushed out and replaced by a new set, with the next
search domain appended.
This also adds a new flag SD_RESOLVED_NO_SEARCH to disable search domain
behaviour. The "systemd-resolve-host" tool is updated to make this
configurable via --search=.

This also adds client-side support for this to systemd-resolve-host.
Note that the ResolveService() API can deal both with DNS-SD service
(consisting of service name, type and domain), as well as classic SRV
services (consisting just of a type and a domain), all exposed in the
same call.
This patch also reworks CNAME handling in order to reuse it between
hostname, RR and service lookups.
In contrast to Avahi and Bonjour, this new API will actually reolve the
A/AAAA RRs the SRV RRs point to in one go (unless this is explicitly
disabled). This normally comes for free, as these RRs are sent along
the SRV responses anyway, hence let's make use of that. This makes the
API considerably easier to use, as a single ResolveService() invocation
will return all necessary data to pick a server and connect() to it.
Note that this only implements the DNS-SD resolving step, it does not
implement DNS-SD browsing, as that makes sense primarily on mDNS, due to
its continuous nature.
This also allows us to drop build.h from a ton of files, hence do so.
Since we touched the #includes of those files, let's order them properly
according to CODING_STYLE.
If the user specifies an interface by its ifindex we should handle this
nicely. Hence let's try to parse the ifindex as a number before we try
to resolve it as an interface name.
We explicitly need to turn off name compression when marshalling or
demarshalling RRs for bus transfer, since they otherwise refer to packet
offsets that reference packets that are not transmitted themselves.
With this change we'll now also generate synthesized RRs for the local
LLMNR hostname (first label of system hostname), the local mDNS hostname
(first label of system hostname suffixed with .local), the "gateway"
hostname and all the reverse PTRs. This hence takes over part of what
nss-myhostname already implemented.
Local hostnames resolve to the set of local IP addresses. Since the
addresses are possibly on different interfaces it is necessary to change
the internal DnsAnswer object to track per-RR interface indexes, and to
change the bus API to always return the interface per-address rather than
per-reply. This change also patches the existing clients for resolved
accordingly (nss-resolve + systemd-resolve-host).
This also changes the routing logic for queries slightly: we now ensure
that the local hostname is never resolved via LLMNR, thus making it
trustable on the local system.
There's no reason to explicitly turn off bus activation for resolved
here. The reason this was done before was that the code was copied from
nss-resolve, which has a fallback to glibc's nss-dns if resolved is not
reachable. However, such a logic makes no sense for resolve-host since
such a fallback doesn't make sense here, which means we can actually
turn on activation. Let's do it hence.
Right now, systemd-resolve-host fails if resolved is not running.
However, resolved supports bus-activation (at least on kdbus) just fine.
Enable this so we can use resolve-host at all times.
This was disabled right from the beginning, without any comment why.
sd_bus_flush_close_unref() is a call that simply combines sd_bus_flush()
(which writes all unwritten messages out) + sd_bus_close() (which
terminates the connection, releasing all unread messages) +
sd_bus_unref() (which frees the connection).
The combination of this call is used pretty frequently in systemd tools
right before exiting, and should also be relevant for most external
clients, and is hence useful to cover in a call of its own.
Previously the combination of the three calls was already done in the
_cleanup_bus_close_unref_ macro, but this was only available internally.

This patch removes includes that are not used. The removals were found with
include-what-you-use which checks if any of the symbols from a header is
in use.
If the format string contains %m, clearly errno must have a meaningful
value, so we might as well use log_*_errno to have ERRNO= logged.

Negative switches are a bad un-normalized thing. We alerady have some,
but we should try harder to avoid intrdoucing new ones.
Hence, instead of adding two switches:

--no-foobar
Let's instead use the syntax
--foobar
--foobar=yes
--foobar=no
Where the first two are equivalent. The boolean argument is parsed
following the usual rules.
Change all new negative switches this way.
This patch also properly aligns the --help table, so that single char
switches always get a column separate of the long switches.
Since b5eca3a205 we don't attempt to GC
busses anymore when unsent messages remain that keep their reference,
when they otherwise are not referenced anymore. This means that if we
explicitly want connections to go away, we need to close them.
With this change we will no do so explicitly wherver we connect to the
bus from a main program (and thus know when the bus connection should go
away), or when we create a private bus connection, that really should go
away after our use.
This fixes connection leaks in the NSS and PAM modules.
getopt is usually good at printing out a nice error message when
commandline options are invalid. It distinguishes between an unknown
option and a known option with a missing arg. It is better to let it
do its job and not use opterr=0 unless we actually want to suppress
messages. So remove opterr=0 in the few places where it wasn't really
useful.
When an error in options is encountered, we should not print a lengthy
help() and overwhelm the user, when we know precisely what is wrong
with the commandline. In addition, since help() prints to stdout, it
should not be used except when requested with -h or --help.
Also, simplify things here and there.
