Lennart Poettering fafff8f1ff user-util: rework get_user_creds()
Let's fold get_user_creds_clean() into get_user_creds(), and introduce a
flags argument for it to select "clean" behaviour. This flags parameter
also learns to other new flags:

- USER_CREDS_SYNTHESIZE_FALLBACK: in this mode the user records for
  root/nobody are only synthesized as fallback. Normally, the synthesized
  records take precedence over what is in the user database.  With this
  flag set this is reversed, and the user database takes precedence, and
  the synthesized records are only used if they are missing there. This
  flag should be set in cases where doing NSS is deemed safe, and where
  there's interest in knowing the correct shell, for example if the
  admin changed root's shell to zsh or suchlike.

- USER_CREDS_ALLOW_MISSING: if set, and a UID/GID is specified by
  numeric value, and there's no user/group record for it accept it
  anyway. This allows us to fix #9767

This then also ports all users to set the most appropriate flags.

Lennart Poettering b2a60844c4 namespace: when creating device nodes, also create /dev/char/* symlinks
On the host these symlinks are created by udev, and we consider them API
and make use of them ourselves at various places. Hence when running a
private /dev, also create these symlinks so that lookups by major/minor
work in such an environment, too.

Lennart Poettering 3cd24c1aa9 core: when setting up PAM, try to get tty of STDIN_FILENO if not set explicitly
When stdin/stdout/stderr is initialized from an fd, let's read the tty
name of it if we can, and pass that to PAM.

This makes sure that "machinectl shell" sessions have proper TTY fields
initialized that "loginctl" then shows.

Lennart Poettering 37ec0fdd34 tree-wide: add clickable man page link to all --help texts
This is a bit like the info link in most of GNU's --help texts, but we
don't do info but man pages, and we make them properly clickable on
terminal supporting that, because awesome.

I think it's generally advisable to link up our (brief) --help texts and
our (more comprehensive) man pages a bit, so this should be an easy and
straight-forward way to do it.

Lennart Poettering a3c1168ac2 core: rework StopWhenUnneeded= logic
Previously, we'd act immediately on StopWhenUnneeded= when a unit state
changes. With this rework we'll maintain a queue instead: whenever
there's the chance that StopWhenUneeded= might have an effect we enqueue
the unit, and process it later when we have nothing better to do.

This should make the implementation a bit more reliable, as the unit notify event
cannot immediately enqueue tons of side-effect jobs that might
contradict each other, but we do so only in a strictly ordered fashion,
from the main event loop.

This slightly changes the check when to consider a unit "unneeded".
Previously, we'd assume that a unit in "deactivating" state could also
be cleaned up. With this new logic we'll only consider units unneeded
that are fully up and have no job queued. This means that whenever
there's something pending for a unit we won't clean it up.

Filipe Brandenburger d34673ecb8 socket-util: Introduce send_one_fd_iov() and receive_one_fd_iov()
These take a struct iovec to send data together with the passed FD.

The receive function returns the FD through an output argument. In case data is
received, but no FD is passed, the receive function will set the output
argument to -1 explicitly.

Update code in dynamic-user to use the new helpers.

When DynamicUser=yes and static User= are set, and the user has
different uid and gid, then as the storage socket for the dynamic
user does not contains gid, we need to obtain gid.

Lennart Poettering 5686391b00 core: introduce new Type=exec service type
Users are often surprised that "systemd-run" command lines like
"systemd-run -p User=idontexist /bin/true" will return successfully,
even though the logs show that the process couldn't be invoked, as the
user "idontexist" doesn't exist. This is because Type=simple will only
wait until fork() succeeded before returning start-up success.

This patch adds a new service type Type=exec, which is very similar to
Type=simple, but waits until the child process completed the execve()
before returning success. It uses a pipe that has O_CLOEXEC set for this
logic, so that the kernel automatically sends POLLHUP on it when the
execve() succeeded but leaves the pipe open if not. This means PID 1
waits exactly until the execve() succeeded in the child, and not longer
and not shorter, which is the desired functionality.

Making use of this new functionality, the command line
"systemd-run -p User=idontexist -p Type=exec /bin/true" will now fail,
as expected.

Lennart Poettering 25b583d7ff core: swap order of "n_storage_fds" and "n_socket_fds" parameters
When process fd lists to pass to activated programs we always place the
socket activation fds first, and the storage fds last. Irritatingly in
almost all calls the "n_storage_fds" parameter (i.e. the number of
storage fds to pass) came first so far, and the "n_socket_fds" parameter
second. Let's clean this up, and specify the number of fds in the order
the fds themselves are passed.

(Also, let's fix one more case where "unsigned" was used to size an
array, while we should use "size_t" instead.)

Lennart Poettering f806dfd345 tree-wide: increase granularity of percent specifications all over the place to permille
We so far had various placed we'd parse percentages with
parse_percent(). Let's make them use parse_permille() instead, which is
downward compatible (as it also parses percent values), and increases
the granularity a bit. Given that on the wire we usually normalize
relative specifications to something like UINT32_MAX anyway changing
from base-100 to base-1000 calculations can be done easily without
breaking compat.

This commit doesn't document this change in the man pages. While
allowing more precise specifcations permille is not as commonly
understood as perent I guess, hence let's keep this out of the docs for
now.

Lennart Poettering 6a1d4d9fa6 core: properly reset all ExecStatus structures when entering a new unit cycle
Whenever a unit is started fresh we should flush out any runtime data
from the previous cycle. We are pretty good at that already, but what so
far we missed was the ExecStart=/ExecStop=/… command exit status data.
Let's fix that, and properly flush out that stuff too.

Consider this service:

    [Service]
    ExecStart=/bin/sleep infinity
    ExecStop=/bin/false

When this service is started, then stopped and then started again
"systemctl status" would show the ExecStop= results of the previous run
along with the ExecStart= results of the current one, which is very
confusing. With this patch this is corrected: the data is kept right
until the moment the new service cycle starts, and then flushed out.
Hence "systemctl status" in that case will only show the ExecStart=
data, but no ExecStop= data, like it should be.

This should fix part of the confusion of #9588

We always initialize it from the same field in ExecCommand anyway, hence
there's no point in passing it separately to exec_spawn(), after all we
already pass the ExecCommand structure itself anyway.

No change in behaviour.

Alan Jenkins d3243f55ca core: remove support for API bus "started outside our own logic"
Looking at a recent Bad Day, my log contains over 100 lines of

    systemd[23895]: Failed to connect to API bus: Connection refused

It is due to "systemd --user" retrying to connect to an API bus.[*]  I
would prefer to avoid spamming the logs.  I don't think it is good for us
to retry so much like this.

systemd was mislead by something setting DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS.  My best
guess is an unfortunate series of events caused gdm to set this.  gdm has
code to start a session dbus if there is not a bus available already (and
in this case it exports the environment variable).  I believe it does not
normally do this when running under systemd, because "systemd --user" and
hence "dbus.service" would already have been started by pam_systemd.

I see two possibilities

1. Rip out the check for DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS entirely.
2. Only check for DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS on startup.  Not in the
   "recheck" logic.

The justification for 2), is that the recheck is called from unit_notify(),
this is used to check whether the service just started (or stopped) was
"dbus.service".  This reason for rechecking does not apply if we think
the session bus was started outside our logic.

But I think we can justify 1).  dbus-daemon ships a statically-enabled
/usr/lib/systemd/user/dbus.service, which would conflict with an attempt to
use an external dbus.  Also "systemd --user" is started from user@.service;
if you try to start it manually so that it inherits an environment
variable, it will conflict if user@.service was started by pam_systemd
(or loginctl enable-linger).

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 81d7c69657 core: use the generic module_load() function
This allows aliases to be used for the basic modules we load from pid1 before
udev is started. In #9501 the kernel renamed autofs4 to autofs, with "autofs4"
as alias, but we wouldn't load the module, because we didn't follow aliases.
The kernel change was reverted, but it's probably better to support aliases.

Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek d35f51ea84 tree-wide: use "polkit" to refer to PolicyKit/polkit
Back in 2012 the project was renamed, see the release notes for v 0.105
[https://cgit.freedesktop.org/polkit/tree/NEWS#n754]. Let's update our
documentation and comments to do the same. Referring to PolicyKit is confusing
to users because at the time the polkit api changed too, and we support the new
version. I updated NEWS too, since all the references to PolicyKit there were
added after the rename.

"PolicyKit" is unchanged in various URLs and method call names.

Michal Koutný 1e75824cb0 core/manager: Make sure jobs statistics are not double after daemon-reload
We add n_installed_jobs and n_failed_jobs to our inner state after
deserialization. This is fine during daemon-reexec when we start with clear
Manager (and some jobs possibly queued before deserialization), however,
daemon-reload works with the same manager and adding the values would
effectively double the counters. Reset the counters before we deserialize and
add their values again.

Lennart Poettering 88116909ec core: explicitly trigger changing udev SYSTEMD_WANTS properties
This compensates for the unsynchronized reload cycles of systemd and
udev: we manually trigger the deps listed in SYSTEMD_WANTS properties if
they change for device units that are already up. That way all deps
defined that way will be triggered at least once: the first time the
unit goes up by the usual dependency logic, and if it already is up by
the device.c specific logic.

/tmp is first mounted over with a new mount. Then, when /var/tmp
is being resolved, it points to /tmp/varrr, which by then doesn't
exist, because it had already been obscured.

change bits that are part of our copyright header for that.

hence, let's just get rid of this old cruft, and shorten our codebase a
bit.

debugging easier.

variables or any other means ), the empty string in the "LogTarget" property is
now supported as well as sending SIGTRMIN+26 signal.

Lennart Poettering 228af36fff core: add new PrivateMounts= unit setting
This new setting is supposed to be useful in most cases where
"MountFlags=slave" is currently used, i.e. as an explicit way to run a
service in its own mount namespace and decouple propagation from all
mounts of the new mount namespace towards the host.

The effect of MountFlags=slave and PrivateMounts=yes is mostly the same,
as both cause a CLONE_NEWNS namespace to be opened, and both will result
in all mounts within it to be mounted MS_SLAVE. The difference is mostly
on the conceptual/philosophical level: configuring the propagation mode
is nothing people should have to think about, in particular as the
matter is not precisely easyto grok. Moreover, MountFlags= allows configuration
of "private" and "slave" modes which don't really make much sense to use
in real-life and are quite confusing. In particular PrivateMounts=private means
mounts made on the host stay pinned for good by the service which is
particularly nasty for removable media mount. And PrivateMounts=shared
is in most ways a NOP when used a alone...

The main technical difference between setting only MountFlags=slave or
only PrivateMounts=yes in a unit file is that the former remounts all
mounts to MS_SLAVE and leaves them there, while that latter remounts
them to MS_SHARED again right after. The latter is generally a nicer
approach, since it disables propagation, while MS_SHARED is afterwards
in effect, which is really nice as that means further namespacing down
the tree will get MS_SHARED logic by default and we unify how
applications see our mounts as we always pass them as MS_SHARED
regardless whether any mount namespacing is used or not.

The effect of PrivateMounts=yes was implied already by all the other
mount namespacing options. With this new option we add an explicit knob
for it, to request it without any other option used as well.

introduces a new load state "bad-setting" that is entered in precisely
this case.

With this addition error messages on bad settings should be a lot more
explicit, as we don't have to show some generic "errno" error in that
case, but can explicitly say that a bad setting is at fault.

Internally this unit load state is entered as soon as any configuration
loader call returns ENOEXEC. Hence: config parser calls should return
ENOEXEC now for such essential unit file settings. Turns out, they
generally already do.

The load_error is only valid in some load_state cases, lets generate
prettier messages for other cases too, by reusing the
bus_unit_validate_load_state() call which does jus that.

Clients (such as systemctl) ignored LoadError unles LoadState was
"error" before. With this change they could even show LoadError in other
cases and it would show a useful name.

Lennart Poettering 04eb582acc core: enumerate perpetual units in a separate per-unit-type method
Previously the enumerate() callback defined for each unit type would do
two things:

1. It would create perpetual units (i.e. -.slice, system.slice, -.mount and
   init.scope)

2. It would enumerate units from /proc/self/mountinfo, /proc/swaps and
   the udev database

With this change these two parts are split into two seperate methods:
enumerate() now only does #2, while enumerate_perpetual() is responsible
for #1. Why make this change? Well, perpetual units should have a
slightly different effect that those found through enumeration: as
perpetual units should be up unconditionally, perpetually and thus never
change state, they should also not pull in deps by their state changing,
not even when the state is first set to active. Thus, their state is
generally initialized through the per-device coldplug() method in
similar  fashion to the deserialized state from a previous run would be
put into place. OTOH units found through regular enumeration should
result in state changes (and thus pull in deps due to state changes),
hence their state should be put in effect in the catchup() method
instead. Hence, given this difference, let's also separate the
functions, so that the rule is:

1. What is created in enumerate_perpetual() should be started in
   coldplug()

2. What is created in enumerate() should be started in catchup().

Lennart Poettering 66f3fdbb07 core: rework how device units get set up
This reworks how device units are "powered on".

This makes sure that any device changes that might have happened while
we were restarting/reloading will be noticed properly. For that we'll
now properly serialize/deserialize both the device unit state and the
device "found" flags, and restore these initially in the "coldplug"
phase of the manager deserialization. While enumerating the udev devices
during startup we'll put together a new "found" flags mask, which we'll
the switch to in the "catchup" phase of the manager deserialization,
which follows the "coldplug" phase.

Note that during the "coldplug" phase no unit state change events are
generated, which is different for the "catchall" phase which will do
that. Thus we correctly make sure that the deserialized state won't pull
in new deps, but any device's change while we were reloading would.

Lennart Poettering f0831ed2a0 core: add a new unit method "catchup()"
This is very similar to the existing unit method coldplug() but is
called a bit later. The idea is that that coldplug() restores the unit
state from before any prior reload/restart, i.e. puts the deserialized
state in effect. The catchup() call is then called a bit later, to
catch up with the system state for which we missed notifications while
we were reloading. This is only really useful for mount, swap and device
mount points were we should be careful to generate all missing unit
state change events (i.e. call unit_notify() appropriately) for
everything that happened while we were reloading.

Lennart Poettering 50be4f4a46 core: rework how we track service and scope PIDs
This reworks how systemd tracks processes on cgroupv1 systems where
cgroup notification is not reliable. Previously, whenever we had reason
to believe that new processes showed up or got removed we'd scan the
cgroup of the scope or service unit for new processes, and would tidy up
the list of PIDs previously watched. This scanning is relatively slow,
and does not scale well. With this change behaviour is changed: instead
of scanning for new/removed processes right away we do this work in a
per-unit deferred event loop job. This event source is scheduled at a
very low priority, so that it is executed when we have time but does not
starve other event sources. This has two benefits: this expensive work is
coalesced, if events happen in quick succession, and we won't delay
SIGCHLD handling for too long.

This patch basically replaces all direct invocation of
unit_watch_all_pids() in scope.c and service.c with invocations of the
new unit_enqueue_rewatch_pids() call which just enqueues a request of
watching/tidying up the PID sets (with one exception: in
scope_enter_signal() and service_enter_signal() we'll still do
unit_watch_all_pids() synchronously first, since we really want to know
all processes we are about to kill so that we can track them properly.

Moreover, all direct invocations of unit_tidy_watch_pids() and
unit_synthesize_cgroup_empty_event() are removed too, when the
unit_enqueue_rewatch_pids() call is invoked, as the queued job will run
those operations too.

All of this is done on cgroupsv1 systems only, and is disabled on
cgroupsv2 systems as cgroup-empty notifications are reliable there, and
we do not need SIGCHLD events to track processes there.

Lennart Poettering 2ad2e41a72 core: don't trigger OnFailure= deps when a unit is going to restart
This adds a flags parameter to unit_notify() which can be used to pass
additional notification information to the function. We the make the old
reload_failure boolean parameter one of these flags, and then add a new
flag that let's unit_notify() if we are configured to restart the
service.

Note that this adjusts behaviour of systemd to match what the docs say.

Lennart Poettering b294e5943f core: introduce specifiers for /tmp and /var/tmp
This corresponds nicely with the specifiers we already pass for
/var/lib, /var/cache, /run and so on.

This is particular useful to update the test-path service files to
operate without guessable files, thus allowing multiple parallel
test-path invocations to pass without issues (the idea is to set $TMPDIR
early on in the test to some private directory, and then only use the
new %T or %V specifier to refer to it).

Yu Watanabe 5609f6888b core: make StateDirectory= or friends works with DynamicUser= and RootDirectory=/RootImage=
The symbolic links to private directories specified by StateDirectory=
or its friends are created on the host. So, when DynamicUser= and
RootDirectory=/RootImage= are set, then the executed process cannot
access private directory.
This makes the private directories are mounted on the non-private place
when both DynamicUser= and RootDirectory=/RootImage= are set.

Fixes #8965.

Yu Watanabe fdff1da299 core: chown RuntimeDirectory= if DynamicUser= is set
When DynamicUser= is set, then RuntimeDirectory= should be always
chowned, as the service unit may enable RuntimeDirectoryPreserve=,
and the uid or gid may changed from the last run.
This also makes easier to migrate the service to use DynamicUser=.

Lennart Poettering a210692525 tree-wide: port over all code to the new CONFIG_PARSER_PROTOTYPE() macro
This makes most header files easier to look at. Also Emacs gets really
slow when browsing through large sections of overly long prototypes,
which is much improved by this macro.

We should probably not do something similar with too many other cases,
as macros like this might help readability for some, but make it worse
for others. But I think given the complexity of this specific prototype
and how often we use it, it's worth doing.

David Tardon a7a7163df7 fix race between daemon-reload and other commands
When "systemctl daemon-reload" is run at the same time as "systemctl
start foo", the latter might hang. That's because commands like start
wait for JobRemoved signal to know when the job is finished. But if the
job is finished during reloading, the signal is never sent.

The hang can be easily reproduced by running

    # for ((N=1; N>0; N++)) ; do echo $N ; systemctl daemon-reload ; done
    # for ((N=1; N>0; N++)) ; do echo $N ; systemctl start systemd-coredump.socket ; done

in two different terminals. The start command will hang after 1-2
iterations.

This keeps track of jobs that were started before reload and finished
during it and sends JobRemoved after the reload has finished.

Commenting out "WatchdogTimeout=3min" in systemd-logind.service causes
NotifyAccess to go from "main" to "none", breaking support for logind

When I see "test", I have to think three times what the return value
means. With "below" this is immediately clear. ratelimit_below(&limit)
sounds almost like English and is imho immediately obvious.

(I also considered ratelimit_ok, but this strongly implies that being under the
limit is somehow better. Most of the times this is true, but then we use the
ratelimit to detect triple-c-a-d, and "ok" doesn't fit so well there.)
